American Heart Association Revises Guidelines for Preventing Infective Endocarditis

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently revised their guidelines for the prevention of infective endocarditis (known in the past as Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis) .  Based on a growing body of evidence that the risks of antibiotics may outweigh the benefits, the AHA recommends "that only people who are at the greatest risk of bad outcomes from infective endocarditis (IE) - an infection of the heart's inner lining or the heart valves - should receive short-term preventive antibiotics before common, routine dental procedures..."  No longer are patients with regurgitation of the heart valves required to take preventive antibiotics before dental procedures.
